The 2009 HEB Tournament of Champions was held in San Antonio from June 1-3rd. Over the past 23 years this event has raised a total of $38 million to benefit groups that focus on children and education throughout the State of Texas. The H-E-B Spirit of Giving serves as an excellent example of corporate support for children and the under served in our communities, and the HEB Tournament of Champions is just one more example.
This year, Roy Maas’ Youth Alternatives, as well as Respite Care and the Children’s Shelter, were chosen as the three sites for the HEB Tournament of Champion sponsors and HEB employees to spend the afternoon volunteering rather than playing golf! Our MeadowLand Campus, a residential treatment center for almost 80 children who have been abused, welcomed three busloads of about 150 volunteers on June 2nd. They painted fences, built an outdoor classroom deck and a nature path, organized the library, cleaned classrooms, sanded and refinished furniture—and much more—all in the blazing heat of the day! We simply could not have asked for more enthusiastic, upbeat and hard working folks! The volunteer labor and in-kind donations saved us at least $30,000! Clearly the HEB vendors and suppliers share the HEB Spirit of Giving philosophy of supporting communities and helping children. Your belief in our programs and our children means so much to us.
We would like to acknowledge all the vendors that sent volunteers to MeadowLand: Colgate-Palmolive; Cott Beverages, Daymon Worldwide, inComm, Johnson & Johnson, Acosta, McCormick, Mazzetta Co., Theis Distributing, Ahneuser-Busch, ConAgra Foods, S.C. Johnson, L’Oreal Paris, Kellogg’s, Pinnacle Foods Group, Energizer, Campbell Soup, PepperidgeFarms, Expack Seafood, Newman’s Own, Kimberly-Clark…and, of course, H-E-B!
From our Board of Directors, our staff, and our children please accept our appreciation and a huge THANK YOU to each and every volunteer for showing our children how important and valued they are—you are all Champions to us.
